Instructions for Wearers of Ortho-K Lenses

Below are instructions to wearing and caring for your Ortho-K lenses. These instructions assume you are using Menicon solutions. If you are using Boston or Alcon or other solutions then the cleaning and storage regimen may be slightly different. These instructions are of a general nature and not intended to replace professional advice which is specific to you.

Inserting Contact Lenses:

  • Wash your hands and dry with a lint free towel
  • Plug the sink to prevent the lens falling in whilst rinsing.
  • Prepare the case, the Menicare bottle, and a mirror
  • Put one or two drops of Theratears Gel into each eye.
  • remove the right lens from the case
  • rinse the lens with Menicare Plus solution.
  • Place right the lens onto the index finger. Pull the lower eyelid down with the middle finger of the same hand.
  • Raise the upper eyelid with the index finger of the other hand.
  • Place the contact lens onto the centre of the cornea. Be careful not to scratch your eye with your fingernail.
  • gently release the bottom eyelid and then the top eyelid.
  • Handle lenses carefully, avoiding touching your eye or the lenses with your fingernails
  • Repeat with the left lens. Always handle right and left lenses in the same order so you do not mix them up.

Removing Contact Lenses:

  • Wash your hands and dry with a lint free towel
  • Plug the sink to prevent the lens falling in whilst rinsing.
  • Prepare the case, the Menicare bottle, and a mirror
  • Hold the lower eyelid at the base of the eyelashes with the index finger of one hand and the upper eyelid at the base of the eyelashes with the index finger of the other hand.
  • Open your eye wide so that the eyelids are not covering the contact lens.
  • Push the two eyelids together whilst pushing them gently against the eyeball. The eyelids should the push under the edge of the contact lens and cause it to pop out.
  • Repeat with the other lens. Always handle right and left lenses in the same order so you do not mix them up.

Cleaning your Contact Lenses

Daily Cleaning:

  • Place a lens on the palm of your hand and put a few drops of Menicare Plus solution onto the lens. Rub the lens with your forefinger against the palm of your hand. Rub very gently but thoroughly, ensuring that both surfaces of the lens are rubbed. Be careful not to scratch the lens with your fingernail. Count to 20 whilst rubbing to ensure that you have rubbed for a sufficient amount of time.
  • Rinse the lens with Menicare Plus solution or Sterile Saline solution.
  • Store the lens in the lens case with fresh Menicare Plus solution in the case. The case needs to be filled to the level indicated on the case. Never fill the case less than half full with solution.
  • Never re-use solution from the previous day.
  • Repeat with the other lens.

Monthly Protein Cleaning:

Once a month use Menicon Progent protein cleaner for intensive protein cleaning.
  • Place the lenses into the holders on the lid of the Progent case.
    Open the holders to insert the lens, do not force it in.
  • Mix dose A and Dose B of Progent into the progent case.
  • Close the lid and leave for 30 minutes.
    DO NOT EXCEED 30 MINUTES
  • rinse very thoroughly with Menicare Plus for at least 15 seconds.

The progent needs to be completely washed off before the lenses go back into the eye.
In case of accidentally getting Progent in the eye, wash thoroughly under running water and consult your optometrist.
Progent and must be kept out of reach of children and must never be consumed.

Safe Lens Wear:

  • Never use tap water or saliva on contact lenses. Both have been responsible for serious eye infections leading to permanent eye damage.
  • If any of; Pain, discomfort, or redness occur, remove the lenses and clean and rinse with Menicare Plus solution and re-insert. If symptoms persits, remove lenses and telephone our clinic for an appointment.
  • Do not wear contact lenses when you have any eye inflammation or eye infection
  • Do not wear contact lenses when you have eye disease which affects the cornea or conjunctiva
  • Do not wear contact lenses when you have a systemic disease which results aggravation of ocular inflammation with contact lens wear
  • Do not wear contact lenses whilst you are affected by ocular allergies which are worsened by contact lens wear or contact lens solutions
  • Do not wear contact lenses whilst whilst your eyes are healing after eye surgery
  • Do not use solutions intended for soft contact lenses
  • Do not use solutions once they have been openned for more than 3 months or once they have passed their expiry date.
  • replace the case at least every three months. The case is the most common source of contamination. The more frequently you can replace it the better.
  • If you do not wear your lenses every day, it is OK to leave the lenses in a case for one week and still put them into the eye. If you leave it in the case for a longer period of time, then before wearing the contact lenses give them a clean and replace the solution in the case.
  • Never re-use solution in the case. Replace all solution. Do not top up the solution as the old solution no longer kills germs. Topping up sulution in the case has been responsible for serious eye infections.
  • Do not allow lenses to dry out. If they dry out, leave them in to soak in Menicare solution for at least one hour.
  • If eye make-up, hair sprays, perfumes, or eye medicines come into contact with the lenses then they can damage the lenses or make vision with them blurry.
